The Center for Biological Diversity and Defenders of Wildlife petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect Hickory Nut Gorge green salamanders under the Endangered Species Act. Scientists estimate that there are only a few hundred of the salamanders left in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
