National Marine Fisheries Service Restricts Pacific Cod Fishing to Prevent Overfishing

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announced a temporary rule prohibiting directed fishing for Pacific cod by catcher vessels less than fifty feet in overall length using hook-and-line gear in the Central Regulatory Area of the Gulf of Alaska. According to NMFS, this action is necessary to prevent overfishing and will be effective until June 10, 2022. NMFS announced that it also is prohibiting directed fishing of Pacific cod by catcher/processors using pot gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands until September 1, 2022.
