New York Considers Expanding Definition of “Livestock”

New York Assembly Bill 7533 would expand the definition of livestock to include “purpose-bred animals raised for research, service animals, honey bees, working dogs” and “any working animals in service on a farm.” One of the stated justifications for the bill is that working dogs currently are classified as companion animals which prevents farmers from claiming their loss as “similar to the loss of livestock or crops for the purpose of compensation resulting from criminal injury by a third party.”
