Brooks Institute Emerging Scholar Fellowships
Maggie Wang, Yale Law School and Amber Ward, Columbia Law School have been awarded Brooks Institute Emerging Scholar Fellowships for the 2023-2024 academic-year. The fellowship is administered by the Brooks Institute for Animal Rights Law and Policy.
The fellowship for emerging animal law professors is an academic-year fellowship for 2L and 3L law students who are interested in pursuing a career in law teaching and who seek mentorship and an opportunity to develop a scholarly agenda in the field of animal law. The goal of the fellowship is to increase the number of well-qualified persons who intend to pursue a faculty appointment in a United States law school and make animal law a significant component of their teaching and research.

"I am interested in the use and regulation of animal bodies, especially in contexts of social and ecological uncertainty. My work engages evidence from medieval animal prosecutions, modern pharmaceutical research, and everything in between to ask how human legal systems conceive ofthe overlaps between human and non-human civilizations. I have an academic background in history, a creative background in poetry, and a longstanding fascination for the natural sciences. Thus, I am committed to employing empirical methods while challenging disciplinary, spatial, and temporal boundaries."
Amber Ward, Columbia Law School
"I aim to examine the impact of human attitudes on the treatment and perception of non-human animals across various contexts, as well as their translation into legal and policy frameworks. By exploring the methods used to assess and weigh animal and human interests, I hope to uncover the complexities and challenges inherent in this process, ultimately investigating the ways these interest assessments and general attitudes inform various approaches to animal protection. Furthermore, I am also interested in the intersection of free speech and speech regulation issues that affect consumer attitudes toward animals used for food and research."
