Animals and Longtermism

Description

Current actions can have a lasting impact on those animals who will live in the future and discrimination against sentient beings based on the time they exist seems unjustifiable. The long-term future is therefore relevant for the consideration of non-human animals. This is especially important, even if the current situation of animals is already dire, as in the future such a situation may continue or be exacerbated. The ways this may occur include the expansion of animal exploitation and wild animal suffering, as well as the creation of new forms of suffering. The number of animals thus affected may surpass those living in the present by several orders of magnitude.
