This collection situates feminist animal care theory within feminist theory as well as within the debate over animal rights. In Beyond Animal Rights, the editors had introduced the feminist "ethic of care" theory into philosophical discussions of the treatment of animals. This volume includes seven essays from the editors’ earlier collection, as well as additional essays by various contributors including critiques of current animal rights theory as well as discussions of the significance of the feminist-care tradition, which expresses the need for ethical attentiveness and sympathy in our relationships with animals and the link between the subjugation of women and nature.
