Marine Vertebrates as Sentinels of Ocean Health: Mass Strandings Linked to Emerging Diseases, Biodiversity Loss and a Changing Climate
During the past two decades we have witnessed increasing unusual mortality events of marine species across the planet linked to anthropogenic change affecting species and ecosystems. At what rate the health of the ocean is changing across the planet? We will discuss recent events, potential causes and consequences. Also, we will briefly address how Conservation Medicine and Planetary Health using transdisciplinarity, integrative research, systems thinking and adaptive management can revert, prevent and solve some of these pressing issues.
