In the ongoing litigation of Ray v Chief Animal Welfare Inspector (see Issue 5, Enforcement Updates; Issue 19, Litigation Updates), cow farmer Walter Ray challenged a statement of account issued by the Chief Animal Welfare Inspector (CAWI) totaling $248,712.91 for the removal of 101 cows from his property in December 2021, and their continued veterinary services and boarding. In her decision, Susan Clarke varied the statement of account to $14,276.51. She found that the continued boarding costs could have been mitigated if CAWI and Ray formed an agreement to sell the cows, as Ray previously sought.
