Animal Law Reform South Africa, the EMS Foundation, and Chief Stephen Fritz submitted an application to the High Court of South Africa seeking an order to release three elephants named Lammie, Mopani, and Ramadiba from Johannesburg Zoo. A first of its kind in South Africa, the application seeks a declaration that the continued confinement of the elephants is unlawful and unconstitutional, that the Zoo’s continued captivity of the elephants be reviewed, and that the elephants be released to a suitable rewilding facility.
