Sentencing Decision in R v Anderson & Rossiter (2021 NLPC)

In September 2019, Jody Anderson and Peter Rossiter began fostering a cat named Mittens. Within a month, a witness claimed to have seen someone take Mittens into Anderson and Rossiter’s bathroom, and the two entered behind with an axe and a garbage bag, and Mittens was nowhere to be seen afterward. Anderson and Rossiter were found guilty after trial in December 2019. The sentencing judge considered their childhood trauma, drug use, and prior criminal records in arriving at a sentence of five months incarceration, two years probation, and a lifetime animal prohibition.
