Washington State Senate Passes Landmark Bill Prohibiting Octopus Farming

The Washington State Senate has approved a progressive bill banning octopus farming, with twenty-nine votes in favour and twenty against. Supported by animal rights groups such as the Aquatic Life Institute (ALI), the legislation aims to protect octopuses' welfare and the environment. ALI emphasized octopuses' intelligence and their high level of suffering in captivity, as well as the lack of humane slaughter methods, underscoring the environmental damage caused by octopus farming. The bill coincides with similar initiatives to ban octopus farming in Canada and Spain. The bill awaits approval from the state Governor.
