Rethink Priorities | Shrimp Research Webinar

Description

In the first post of Rethink Priorities' Shrimp Welfare Sequence, Daniela R. Waldhorn and I recently showed that shrimp are the animals most commonly used and killed for food production (see visualizations).

But is the large size of the shrimp farming industry an issue? After all, farmers might treat shrimp well, and they may not even be sentient. In upcoming reports, we (Rethink Priorities' shrimp welfare researchers) explore a cause for concern: a large percentage of these individuals die before they are old enough to be slaughtered. After describing farming practices that help explain high mortality rates, we use a quantitative model to explain why the most urgent issues are not necessarily the ones that have attracted the most attention.

Our upcoming webinar, Shrimp Farming: Vast in Scale, Diverse in Welfare Challenges, provides a preview of this upcoming work on shrimp welfare. We invite you to join Hannah McKay, Associate Researcher at Rethink Priorities, for a short presentation, followed by Q&A to a panel of RP's shrimp welfare researchers. The webinar will take place on Monday, November 20 from 11:00 am to 11:45 am EST (5:00 - 5:45 pm CET).
