UK Dog Welfare: Law Reform

How do we protect dogs - supposedly our best friends - from exploitation and abuse and what part can the law play in addressing these serious issues?

As the new year starts with an unprecedented rise in dog ownership due to lockdown, we highlight the plight of the dogs who come from low welfare, puppy farms within the UK and abroad and the challenges facing regulators to close down the trade to protect dogs and consumers. We look at the allied issues of 'designer' dogs and fashion trends, including ear cropping and other mutilations, as well as the genetic conformities deliberately bred into some breeds, despite the welfare issues they present. We also address other areas of law reform, including Scotland's new Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) (Scotland) Bill, introduced by Emma Harper MSP.
