Helsinki Animal Law Seminar

Diego Sánchez

Currently, there are some efforts to recognize rights for animals and the environment. However, apparently, such rights do not have the same philosophical bases as human rights. In this way, animal rights are often criticized because they are not based on human dignity and because they are not very definable.

For these reasons, in this presentation I will present a new legal approach. Basically, I will propose that human rights and animal rights be understood according to a behavioral model. In this way, rights should not be defined according to the characteristics of a certain subject, but rather according to the characteristics of certain conducts.

With this I intend that this model allows us to understand the rights of animals coherently and under the same protective approach of human rights.
