When Doves Cry: A Survey of the Avian Legal Landscape

Description

Laws governing the treatment and protection of bird populations impact not only animal welfare but also diverse interests ranging from industry to religious practices. This program, sponsored by the Committee on Animals and the Law, will address recent developments in the field of Avian Law, including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Animal Welfare Act (“AWA”) and other laws related to wild birds, avian agriculture and safety, the intersection of religious laws and enforcement of secular law applicable to birds, as well as the impact that newly released AWA regulations will have on the legal status of birds. In addition to offering practical guidance for attorneys, this program will attempt to tackle some complex ethical questions including the status and treatment of birds versus other animals under varying legal frameworks.
