Squirrelpox Reported by Ontario Animal Rehabilitation Centre

Squirrelpox, a highly-contagious viral disease that can cause skin lesions among squirrels, has been reported by an animal rehabilitation centre in Waterloo, Ontario. Wildlife Haven Waterloo has noticed a recent surge in inquiries regarding squirrels with likely infections, marking a return of Squirrelpox cases after a five-year absence at the facility. A study conducted in 2020 showed that antibodies for the virus, while primarily absent in British Columbia, were found in seventy-nine per cent of nineteen grey squirrels tested in Toronto. While the disease is of no public health significance, it can be severely harmful or deadly for squirrels who contract it.
